I define myself as an eclectic mix of visual neuroscience and computer science. I am more or less interested in the theoretical modeling of the two visual pathways. I ambitiously believe there is a systematic progression by which visual stimuli travel from input to output, and that these transitions are a function of how the human brain is able to encode this information.

My scientific interests are focused on identifying HIV prevention issues for young ethnic and sexual minority men and on collaborating with community-based organizations to respond to the prevention needs of these men. The foundation for my career as a prevention scientist was set during my tenure as a Pre-Doctoral Fellow in UIC's Prevention Research Training Program in Urban Children's Mental Health and AIDS Prevention. I am currently enrolling participants for my dissertation project entitled 'The Oppression and HIV Risk Study.' The purpose of my research is to identify both individual and contextual factors that place young African-American and Latino men who have sex with men at risk for HIV infection. Data from these underserved and hard-to-reach populations may be used to design and improve HIV prevention programs and to advance theory development in the field of HIV prevention.

My utmost concern lies on the urban children/adolescents in poverty. The superkids' stories always fascinate me because I consider any inner-city kid as its candidate. Nowadays I'm trying to conceptualize issues surrounding them in terms of "culture". And I believe more contextual and natural that are approached systematically though can make a huge difference, which draws my attention also to the social policy issues.

I'm interested in using ecological approaches to understanding social issues with an emphasis on the health promotive capacity of communities. My Masters thesis examined whether women saw their experiences with intimate partner violence as "domestic violence" as defined by Missouri state law. My preliminary exam explored the contextual factors that shape women's activism in the U.S. and abroad. My dissertation focused on neighborhood- and setting-level influences on lesbians' alcohol use (click my name to link to the CHLEW study homepage). Related interests include advocacy and public policy, feminist research methods, strengths-based evaluation, and the use of photography in action research.

Broadly speaking, I am interested in people's attitudes and beliefs about the world around them. More specifically, my research interests fall into two categories. First, I am interested political psychology, specifically political ideology. Currently, I am researching the manner in which conservatives and liberals make causal attributions, i.e. how they assign blame for social problems. In the future, I hope to examine the nature and structure of ideologies (political and otherwise). Second, I am interested in people's moral beliefs. Currently, I am developing projects exploring the many ways that moral beliefs differ from otherwise strong but non-moral beliefs. Of course, I am particularly interested in the intersection of ideology and morality.

I am interested in psychology and the law, particularly as it relates to children. I am currently investigating jurors' perceptions of mentally retarded juvenile defendants, and confessions offered by such defendants. More specifically, I am using attribution theory to explain jurors' judgments in cases involving these vulnerable defendants. I am also studying individual differences in repressive personality, fantasy-proneness, and dissociation as they relate to women's suspected and recovered memories of childhood sexual or physical abuse. Finally, I am also studying adult sexual assault victims' experiences with disclosure. Specifically, I am exploring victims' experiences of PTSD and problem drinking as they relate to social reactions received from people that victims disclose to.

Broadly, I am interested in collaborating with schools, students, and families to improve the educational and social experiences of children and adolescents. More specifically, my research interests include examining contextual factors that contribute to aggressive behaviors among children and adolescents. In previous research, I explored the impact of exposure to aggression in the classroom and community on students' levels of aggression toward their peers. In my dissertation, I studied the influence of classroom social networks on children's relationally aggressive behavior.

Current and past projects include: (a)a chapter reviewing factors that influence jurors' perceptions of victims in child sexual abuse cases, (b) a study of the attitudes underlying the tendency for women than to be more pro-victim than men in child sexual abuse cases, (c) a study of case factors influencing juror decisions in infanticide and filicide cases; (d) the effects of defendant sexual orientation and victim gender on juror decisions in child sexual abuse cases (my master's thesis); (e) supervising a client satisfaction survey for community agency in Chicago.
