Program Overview
Welcome to the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC)
Department of Psychology. The department offers graduate training leading
to the PhD degree in one of five divisions:
- Behavioral Neuroscience
- Clinical Psychology
- Cognitive Psychology
- Community and Prevention Research
- Social and Personality Psychology
Students also select a minor from these divisions plus
two additional areas: Psychology and Law; and Statistics, Methods, and

The 1995 National Research Council evaluation of 363
doctoral programs within the United States gave the Department of Psychology
at UIC a "Strong" rating. The department is committed to training
the next generation of leading research scientists. Many of our PhDs have
faculty positions at major institutions around the country including Harvard,
Dartmouth, University of Chicago, etc. There are over thirty faculty members
in the department and more than one hundred graduate students.
Our faculty are engaged in a broad spectrum of research,
supervision, and graduate teaching. Faculty research programs are supported
by a variety of external agencies including: CDC, NASA, NIH, NHLBI, NICHD,
NIMH, NIMDS, NIAAA, NIDA, NSF, HHS, U.S. Department of Education, U.S.
Department of Defense, Agency for Health Care Policy and Research, Ounce
of Prevention, The Surdna Foundation, The Joseph P. Kennedy Foundation,
the Fetzer Institute, and the William T. Grant Foundation. At the time of this writing,
we expect total faculty grant support to near 6 million dollars for the fiscal year.
A substantial number serve as editors or members of editorial boards of
psychological journals, officers of professional societies, and consultants
to a wide range of publishers, journals, and governmental agencies. Many
faculty members provide clinical supervision, services, and consulting
through our Office of Applied Psychological Services, a mental health
clinic located in the department.
The Department of Psychology is strongly committed
to interdisciplinary scholarship and research, and has a long history
of effective collaboration with other UIC training units including: the
Institute for Juvenile Research,the College of Health and Human Development,
the School of Public Health, the College of Education, the Health Research
and Prevention Centers, the Center for Urban Educational Research and
Development, the Center for Literacy, the College of Nursing, and the
Jane Addams College of Social Work. The Department of Psychology also
participates in the UIC Committee on Neuroscience and the UIC Committee
on Educational Psychology. These collaborations provide students and faculty
with interests in these burgeoning, multidisciplinary fields an opportunity
to cooperate in research and training.
